booboisie: middle-class idiots
H. L. Mencken invented this term, a blend of boob (dimwit) and bourgeoisie. It was published in the February 15, 1922 Baltimore Evening Sun as one of a list of related coinages. These include boobariat, booberati, boobarian, boobomaniac, and boobuli. Homo boobiens was invented a little later. The only one of these fantasy terms to catch on was booboisie.
Mencken is best known these days for authoring The American Language, his comprehensive study of the history and development of American English. However, he was more famous in his own day as editor of the left-leaning magazine The New Mercury, where he regularly wrote pieces skewering the booberati.
